40 years ago the construction of the large housing estate Marzahn started on the outskirts of Berlin.  Together with neighbouring Hellersdorf it represents today the largest prefabricated housing estate in Germany as a dormitory for 250.000 people. Since reunification, the district has been the scene of intensive urban redevelopment. Being host for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in 2017 enlarged the variety of urban green and created a touristic highlight in the area.  Main focus in 2018 will be a further densification for housing and improvements of weak neighbourhoods. The guided tour explains the urban development concept of the GDR era as well as the redevelopment, conversion and extension measures since the fall of the Berlin Wall. Against the background of scarce living space in Berlin, a lot of new things are being created here that are well worth seeing.
